NHTSA는 이번 리콜의 대상이 되는 차종이 'Full Self-Driving(FSD：완전자동 운전)' 베타판 버전 2020.40.4.10 이후를 탑재한 Model S・X・3・Y의 일부라며 이러한 차종에서는 완전히 정지해야 하는 교차로에서 일시정지하지 않는 '롤링스톱'이 발생할 수 있다고 지적했습니다.
이 문제는 'Assertive' 모드라는 운전기능으로 인해 롤링스톱이 가능한 점이 교차로 등에서 차량을 완전히 정지시킬 것을 의무화하고 있는 주의 주법을 위반하고 있는 것은 아닌지 SNS상에서 화제되면서 발각되었습니다.
테슬라는 이번 리콜에 대해 롤링스톱을 무효로 하는 무선 소프트웨어 업데이트를 실시하여 대응할 예정으로 2022년 1월 27일 시점에서는 이번 문제에 관련하는 보증청구나 현장보고, 충돌사고, 부상사고, 사망사고는 없었다고 발표했습니다.
테슬라의 일론 마스크 CEO는 트위터에서 "안전면에서는 아무런 문제가 없었습니다. 차는 시속 2마일(시속 약 3.2킬로)까지 감속해 차도 보행자도 없는 시야가 양호한 장소에서 전진을 계속했을 뿐”이라고 말했습니다.
테슬라는 2021년 12월에도 운전 중에 게임을 즐길 수 있는 기능이 논란이 된 후 NHTSA가 조사에 나서자 운전 중인 드라이버가 게임을 즐길 수 없게 조치하는 등 종종 안전면에 대해서 지적받고 있습니다.
